Found Objects #18: More Daily Comics
Diary comics about Jaws, security deposits, arguments, and hiking.
The Fall semester begins tomorrow, and I’m feeling both excited and anxious to greet new students in the afternoon. I spent the day at the lake, so tonight, I’m here at my desk, organizing materials for all three of my classes this week.
In my last post, I shared the beginning of my August diary comic project. I’ve been enjoying the process of creating daily stories in my sketchbook, but I must admit, I’m a bit behind. I was on track with these comics until I left for Montreal on August 11th to spend a week with my friends. When I returned, more friends and family came to visit. Oh well — these were some of the best days of the summer!
Here are a few of my pre-Montreal favorites:
Some observations throughout this process:
-I tried to keep these comics loose, but I found myself getting tighter and using more colors as time went on.
-I failed to complete one comic per day, even though I have been working on them daily. I don’t want to sacrifice the story and rush through the art just to finish each page on time. (I realize that this defeats the purpose of a daily challenge.)
-It was difficult to draw every day on vacation and when I had visitors. Instead, I chose to spend quality time with my family and friends before the semester begins.
-I’ve decided to shorten the challenge to 24 days of daily comics, ending when the school year begins. It feels like a good stopping point. :)
Overall, I’m glad that I decided to make diary comics this month. I feel motivated to start new projects, continue working on my graphic memoir, and draft that new picture book!
I hope to catch up on the remaining comics this week and share some stories from Montreal. At the end of the month, I will illustrate a cover and print copies of the entire series for my paid zine subscribers. I will also be selling copies of my zines in person at three events in New England this Fall:
October 4 + 5: New England Art Book Fair, Portland, ME
November 16: Nonfiction Comics Festival, Burlington, VT
December 7 + 8: Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, Boston, MA
If you are in the area, please stop by! As always, thank you for reading and supporting my work.
I know it was a typo but I would TRULY LOVE to see your 24 DAYS OF DAIRY COMICS!!!
(Your work is an inspiration to my in my own daily drawing challenges.)
These are great. I also love how you share the ups and downs of your process.
