Good morning from Maine! Here’s a new winter Haiku comic, painted in gouache and written in graphite.
I love making these sequences. The five-seven-five rhythm is perfect for capturing fleeting moments and daily observations. Three or four panels fit snugly on a page or within a mini zine. There’s no pressure to tell a story.
I often return to these comics when I’m feeling stuck and uninspired, so I was pleased to see David Lasky offering his four-week “Haiku Comics” class last Sunday. I signed up, inspired to make a series for the January/February issue of my zine subscription.
The first prompt was to show the sounds of winter water. This was easy for me, as we’ve had several snowstorms this month, including a foot last Sunday. (So many remotes classes and shoveling!)
I’ll be painting these poems for the rest of the month, and mailing the zines to paid subscribers at the beginning of March. I hope that you’re all finding ways to cope with the heavy weight of the world these days. If not, I recommend writing and drawing Haikus.
See you next time,
Sarah
Gorgeous, Sarah!
really captured it! Even for me not in snow country:) I really appreciate the time you take to mail out your zines. It’s a special collection.
