Found Objects #9: Close to Home
A new book with my sketchbook paintings + upcoming book fairs and comics expos!
Hello everyone!
It’s been a little while since I’ve written here. I hope that you’ve all had a marvelous summer. This week, we started our Fall semester at Maine College of Art & Design, where I’m teaching three classes: a picture book elective, a sketchbook course for junior illustration majors, and a digital imaging course for freshmen. After spending so much time pouring over artists’ sketchbooks and picture books this summer, I have several new ideas for projects. (More about that later!)
Speaking of sketchbooks, last week, I painted the last spread in my summer gouache book. A miracle, because I usually never finish a sketchbook. (If you’d like to see some video flip-throughs of each page, you can find them on my Instagram.)
It’s hard for me to paint and draw a series of images without a story in mind, so while working on this, I also drafted a narrative. I scanned each page and rearranged them into a sequence. After playing around with several digital brushes, I decided to letter all the text in pen and ink. I just received the books on Tuesday, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
Here’s a video flip-through. If you’d like a copy, you can purchase one in my Etsy shop.
Besides teaching, I’ll also be tabling my work at several events this fall!
I’ll be tabling at the New England Art Book Fair in Portland, Maine at Space Gallery this Friday (5-9 pm) and Saturday (11-4 pm). If you’re in Maine, stop by and say hi!
I will also be tabling with Jenna del Vigna at Small Press Expo in Rockville, MD at Bethesda North Marriott Hotel on Saturday, Sept 9th and Sunday, September 10th.
I organized a table for MECA&D at the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo in Boston, MA at Boston University on Saturday, Sept 30th and Sunday, October 1st. Depending on how much work students submit, I might have a few things on the table.
Lastly, I’ll be tabling at a relatively new event - the Non-fiction Comics Festival in Burlington, VT on November 18th.
Once again, thank you all for your support. For subscribers, I hope that you enjoyed the beach combing accordion book, and I will be sending out a spooky September/October zine sometime in October (after all my September tabling events are over!)
